Kayaking and Whales

These photos were taken during a recent boat trip to Afognak Island, north of Kodiak Island. The humpback whales numbered in the dozens. One morning we paddled out in our kayaks to the middle of the bay, and for the next two hours the whales fed and frolicked all around us. At times they were so close we had to back-paddle!
